Klipsch RP 600M Review

Perhaps the right choice of low-power tube amplifier and sensitive horn speakers is the best thing you can think of for listening to music at home. For many years, such systems were popular with music lovers all over the world, but now they have given way in demand to fashionable soundbars and wireless acoustics. Can the Klipsch RP-600M speakers change that?

klipsch 600 vs 800

The Klipsch Reference RP-600M speakers feature some of the technology found in the much more expensive Heritage series. Interestingly, even those of my acquaintances who were not fans of the Klipsch brand before decide to purchase the RP-600M. Apparently, this acoustics really has some kind of magical appeal for music lovers.

For the price, the RP-600M is certainly not without some compromises. In particular, this applies to choosing the right amp for them, as in the event of a mistake, speakers can sound great for short listening sessions, but tire out for long ones. But done right, the Klipsch RP-600M will completely change the way you experience your music collection.

The sound is impressive

The sound of music on the RP-600M speakers has a sense of presence, which is rarely found in speakers under $1000. Competing models from Quad, Wharfedale, Polk Audio, PSB, KEF and Paradigm also handle all kinds of music and produce a good stereo image - but they're not as impressive as the RP-600M. Some may find the RP-600M sounds too bright, but it's likely they're just using the wrong amp.

Although the Klipschs sound very punchy and detailed, thanks in part to the titanium dome tweeter housed in Tractrix' signature horn, they never get aggressive. If anything, the RP-600M is the most casual-sounding Klipsch speaker I've heard in the last 25 years.

Horns in particular lend a healthy degree of edge to Hank Mobley's excellent jazz albums Workout (Tidal/MQA) and Donald Bird's New Perspective (Tidal/16bit/44.1kHz). Byrd's Cristo Redentor made me a little nervous up until his trumpet intro, but the RP-600M and amps from Schiit Audio, Heed, Cambridge Audio and AmpsandSound, with a slightly warm tonal balance, captured all the magic of this recording without losing any detail.

The 6.5-inch RP-600M Cerametallic bass driver does a great job of conveying vocals, but it doesn't sound like paper or polypropylene cones. Some tracks on Sam Cooke's Night Beat album (Tidal / 16-bit / 44.1 kHz) had a slight harshness that I've never heard when playing the same tracks on a Quad S-2, PSB Alpha P5 or Wharfedale Diamond 10.1c.

When listening to the vinyl version of this album, the upper-mid range sounded less harsh compared to the same tracks on Tidal. Clearly, Klipsch is sacrificing some warmth in the mids for a faster sound and a more focused picture. It's nice if you can balance the sound of your speakers with the right amp or source selection that still retains the richness of the RP-600M's sound.

If you need two-way speakers with powerful bass, the RP-600M will do it, although not 100 percent. After spending some time with the Forte III and La Scala II, I can see a definite pattern in the bass sound on the Klipsch speakers. Instead of wall-shaking low frequencies, the RP-600M delivers fast, melodic and detailed bass, the quality of which will also depend to a certain extent on the chosen amplifier.

Listening to To Cure a Weakling Child by Aphex Twin (Tidal, 16bit/44.1kHz) showed that the RP-600M played electronic music very well. The speakers filled my medium-sized room with tight and fairly deep bass. However, with a subwoofer, this track would have sounded even more powerful.

If you can place the speakers 0.5 to 1 meter from the wall, they will work well and create a convincing soundstage, but the tonal balance on the bass may not be perfect. Since the bass reflex speakers are located at the back, I put them about 60 cm from the wall, and this turned out to be a good compromise in my case. To my ears, the RP-600M sounded richer when I was directly in front of them at a distance of about 2 meters.

Another positive thing about the Klipsch speakers was the design, which both my family and visiting friends loved. Most people did not believe in such a modest cost of these speakers, including taking into account their rather large size. Magnetically latched guards reduced the overall sound output of the speakers by 1 dB, and there is no doubt that they slightly reduced the transparency of the sound. The RP-600M sound best when mounted on good, dedicated stands, and this must also be taken into account.

Trust but verify…

The RP-600M are efficient, high-sensitivity speakers, but Klipsch's 96 dB claim seems overpriced to me. Each amp will affect the sound of the RP-600M - low wattage tube models will provide the best sound, and 25-50 watts from the right amp will be more than enough for these speakers.

The sound picture generated by the RP-600 is above average in quality, but don't expect true three-dimensionality from them. There is a slight harshness in the sound of the speakers in the upper middle range. This can cause problems, for example, when playing vocals, but here a lot will depend on the amplifier. If you choose a warmer-sounding model, this problem will probably never show up on any music.

Conclusion

The Klipsch RP-600M is capable of outperforming more expensive competitors, but with the right electronics. When connected to an inexpensive AV receiver or even an expensive amplifier with an analytical nature, you are unlikely to like their sound. But connect the RP-600M to amplifiers such as the Schiit Audio Aegir or Ragnarok 2, Heed Elixir, or any EL34/EL84-powered tube model, and you're guaranteed to enjoy your music. These acoustics completely dispel the myth that inexpensive bookshelf speakers cannot sound truly emotional. This is a future classic!
