Sennheiser HD 800 headphone review

The Sennheiser HD family is full of stars, from the classic HD 650 to the budget HD 518 . In our opinion, all models with an open headset seem similar to each other. The exception is the Sennheiser HD 800 for 38,000 rubles. These divine headphones seem to have come to us from a futuristic future, as it was seen in 1982, and transmit an unrealistically clear sound.

Is it normal to pay that kind of money for headphones? Call us fools, but the Sennheiser HD 800 is worth the money.

Appearance and convenience

These headphones are simply the pinnacle of Sennheiser's creativity, as evidenced by the appearance. Their forerunners, the HD 650 headphones, were very large, but they looked so simple that there was nothing for the eye to catch on. You can't say about the Sennheiser HD 800. The black and silver model looks like a science fiction device.

The design has remained traditional: a black mesh protecting an open headset. But the style is not traditional. Where other headphone makers strive to give models a classic look (Grado and Ultrasonic made their models for 35,000 rubles in “wood”), Sennheiser makes the HD 800 high-tech.

Their appearance is reminiscent of such films as Blade Runner and The Fifth Element.

The fasteners that connect the ear pads to the headband are plastic, as is the headband. Although we are used to seeing high quality materials in the entire HD line. But there is an advantage in the use of plastic - low weight. Being quite large, the Sennheiser HD 800 weighs only 330 grams.
Thanks to the proper weight distribution and the use of huge soft cushions, these headphones are incredibly comfortable to wear. Of course, the wooden Grado GS1000i is lighter, but the Sennheiser HD 800 is simply made for the comfort of its owner.

Accessories and wires

As befits a high-end headphone, the Sennheiser HD 800 has a thick, detachable wire. Its length is 3 meters, so be careful if you have pets at home. At the end of the wire is a 6.3mm gold-plated connector protected by a long metal sleeve.

You should not move around the city in these headphones, because:

firstly, a resistance of 300 ohms suggests use with an amplifier;
secondly, the open type of headphones involves the use only indoors.
Open-back headphones do not block outside noise. There are no special accessories in the kit, but the box itself deserves to be said a few words about it. Its interior is silk, it looks like a gift box from the outside.

Sound quality and general conclusions

It's predictable, but the sound of the Sennheiser HD 800 is fantastic. It's so crisp that some users criticize it as cold and lab-like. However, the Sennheiser HD 800 does not have the disadvantages of this type of headphones in the form of too weak bass.

The purity and crystal transparency of the sound is even more pronounced than that of Sennheiser's main rival HD 800 Grado GS1000i. But where powerful bass is needed, the Sennheiser HD 800 delivers it with ease. During scenes with explosions in films, the low notes of these headphones are amazing, including their suddenness. It's not overly enthusiastic, it's just that the bass delivery is gorgeous, it reaches those very low sounds that will send goosebumps down your spine.

What completely sets the Sennheiser HD 800 apart from its closest competitors is the widest sound range, which creates the feeling of "sound around" and not those "voices in the head" that many are used to.

The depth of the sound just takes your breath away. Few headphones can transmit the playing of an entire orchestra, they lack the power to separate and transmit all this sound.

If this review were an exam, we would give the Sennheiser HD 800 a perfect score. But, it is necessary to take into account the diverse tastes of buyers, and some of them may find the model not pretentious enough. Sennheiser HD 800 accurately reflect what they reproduce.

The Sennheiser HD 800 are the "scientists" of the music world, amazingly precise and thoughtful. With a wide sound range, more than any other headphones, they will make you feel surrounded by music.

excellent build quality;
comfortable.

Cons:

Not a very sophisticated design.
