JL Audio Dominion d108

Everyone knows that the role of the subwoofer in a home theater cannot be overemphasized. It is his contribution, along with the surrounding sound, that allows you to fully immerse yourself in what is happening on the screen. They also use it when listening to music, although it is much more difficult to correctly integrate the bass module into the system. The American company JL Audio does both. And this success is due to specific reasons.

Subwoofers have become an integral part of car audio systems, which is associated with severe restrictions on the dimensions and placement of speakers in the car, where it is difficult to use multi-liter enclosures and large drivers capable of providing high-quality bass in the design of the main acoustics. It is the experience gained in the design of car subwoofers that allows the American company JL Audio to create completely extraordinary products in the field of home acoustics.

rong style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline-block; font-size: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">In the Home Audio catalog, the company presents the top-end subwoofer Gotham v2, four models each in the Fathom v2 and E-Sub series, and the Dominion series closes the lineup, consisting of two models equipped with drivers with cones with a diameter of 8 and 10 inches. It is with the most affordable models that we will begin our acquaintance with the products of the legendary JL Audio. In addition to the smaller size of the emitter, the younger model is more compact and equipped with a less powerful amplifier (500 watts peak instead of 750 for the d110 model). Accordingly, under the same conditions, it has a higher cutoff frequency (at a level of -3 dB from 29 Hz, and not from 25, as in the d110 model). Otherwise, including the used know-how of the company, the switching arsenal, and functional equipment, these models are identical. Therefore, if your cinema is not too spacious, it is quite possible to save money - the baby JL Audio Dominion d108 is also able to turn up the heat! Another interesting option is to use a pair of d108s in the cinema instead of one d110. Of course, the cost of such a solution will be higher, but you will also get a smoother and more expressive bass.

Another possible way to save some money is to avoid the luxurious finishes in piano lacquer - both models of the Dominion series are offered in a choice of either piano lacquer (Black Gloss) or matt wood-effect film (Black Ash). We will take a closer look at the older model of the series in an expensive finish. or in a matte wood-like film (Black Ash). We will take a closer look at the older model of the series in an expensive finish. or in a matte wood-like film (Black Ash). We will take a closer look at the older model of the series in an expensive finish.

The JL Audio Dominion d110 combines unbridled power with a willingness to plunge into the deepest of the audio spectrum. Low-frequency effects of modern blockbusters in his performance are served savory and tasty. Those who are especially important for the spectacular accompaniment of films have turned to the right address. It is gratifying to note the thoroughness of elaboration of bass instrument parts when playing music records, surprisingly combined with the barrage of low-frequency impulses in the dynamic moments of movie soundtracks. The subwoofer clearly evaluates its capabilities and does not try to dive deeper, as a result of which the bass output is always weighted, taut, and devoid of amorphousness, parasitic overtones, and distortions. In vigorous rock compositions, JL Audio Dominion d110 exhibits an enviable sense of rhythm,

The massive JL Audio Dominion d110 subwoofer cabinet is made of thick MDF panels and finished in luxurious black piano lacquer. Very high-quality assembly - attention to the smallest details gives a high-class product. The emitter is mounted on the front panel of the case and covered with a strong rigid grill on a plastic frame covered with a black acoustically transparent fabric. The grill is removable, but you will have to work hard to dismantle it - the mount is tight, not allowing any overtones. The graceful company logo is present both on the outside of the grill and on the driver cone, as on all JL Audio car woofers. The device rests on powerful supports made of dense rubber, which provides good vibration isolation from the floor. There is no bass reflex port here,

The original design solutions in the design of the drivers allow you to achieve outstanding results - to minimize distortion when reproducing high power signals. Much of the company's know-how is used in the younger line of subwoofers for home use Dominion. A distinctive feature of the drivers used is the large diffuser travel, reaching 68 mm in the older model, with minimal distortion, which makes it possible to achieve such an impressive depth of bass even in a compact closed case.

The patch panel occupies almost the entire rear wall of the subwoofer enclosure. The central place here is given to a cast radiator for cooling the amplifier's output stages. Although the JL Audio Dominion d110 uses a class D amplifier with high energy efficiency, the high output power, reaching 750 watts peak, makes it necessary to take measures for reliable cooling. Above the radiator is a panel with various controls. In addition to the usual knobs for adjusting the gain and cutoff frequency of the crossover, there is a smooth control of the signal phase and a switch that blocks the crossover. The actual switching is concentrated in the lower part of the panel. The low-level input is implemented on RCA connectors and is used both for connection to a stereo pre-amplifier and to the AV-receiver or processor (in the second case, the subwoofer crossover should be turned off). A non-standard comb connector is used for switching high-level signals. The corresponding mating part is included in the kit.

The only concern is the success of connecting thick speaker cables to such a plug - perhaps it would be more expedient to attach a ready-made interconnect to the kit. The subwoofer is devoid of outputs from the crossover, which somewhat complicates the setup of the troponin in a stereo system without a sound processor. But for theatrical installations, this feature of the subwoofer does not matter so much. Another feature of the model is non-disconnectable automatic power control. That is, in the absence of a useful signal at the inputs of the subwoofer for a certain period of time (in this case, about 20 minutes), it automatically goes into standby mode. When such a signal appears, the device wakes up.

This useful feature allows you not only to forget about the need to turn the subwoofer on and off before and after a movie show but also to save a little energy. However, at the same time, I would like to have a conventional power switch and the ability to block the operation of the machine. Finally, there is also an RJ45 connector for connecting the optional JLINK ™ TRX system wireless source unit. It is simply impossible to overestimate the possibility of wireless communication with a subwoofer since this is the only speaker system that can be located in a cinema hall quite freely. And the absence of an extra limiter in the form of a cable from an AV receiver or processor is only a plus here. This useful feature allows you not only to forget about the need to turn the subwoofer on and off before and after a movie show but also to save a little energy.
